Good Causes
Support Military Working Dogs (from USA Weekend Nov 5-7, 2010) In February 2008, Starline Nunley called her son, Maj. Parker Frawley, while he was stationed in Iraq. She was surprised to hear he didn't want any presents. Instead, he told her to help the military's working dogs that were injured while serving their country.
These dogs perform search-and-rescue missions and search for hidden explosives and roadside bombs. Frawley, an Army helicopter pilot, described the injuries these dogs suffered on mission with military units: heat stroke in temperatures reaching more that 130 degrees; eye infections from the constant blowing sand; and injured feet from melted asphalt, broken glass, and pieces of shrapnel.
Nunley knew then that she had to do something.
"I'm a dog person, and those dogs are saving those soldiers' lives every day," she said. "They're doing a job and they need some type of help."
With the help of Gem City Dog Obedience Club of Dayton, Ohio, Nunley raised money to pay for 15 cooling vests to outfit the entire kennel. Once other military dog handlers found out about Nunley's donation, they requested their own equipment. So in May 2008, Nunely started the Military Working Dog Cooling Vest Project from her home in Donnelsville, Ohio.
Nunley's organization has outfitted 229 dogs in Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa, Korea, Guam, Kuwait, and Germany. Along with special cooling vests, protective padding for paws, and dog goggles called "Doggles," Nunley send the dogs ear protection for when they travel by very noisy helicopters. She also sends grooming tools, collapsible water bowls, and toys. She doesn't forget the dogs' handlers - they get packages, too.
Nunley's goal is to outfit every military dog in need. "The military dogs and their handlers are a forgotten group," she says. "People don't know they're over there."

The Groomery
4480 Pearl Ave. San Jose, CA 95136 408-264-3647
The reasons C.A.R.E. loves the Groomery:
- They do an awesome job grooming and clipping.
- They always take our fosters when we give an emergency "HELP" call. They have helped matted poodles, cockers, goldens, shelties, collies, and many others that are mixes.
- They never treat the foster dogs any differently than the dogs that owners bring in.
- They treat all the dogs/pups as individuals and cater to their special needs to keep them happy and well groomed.
- We take our personal dogs to them :)
- They don't charge CARE.
- My Apartment Map "is a housing search web site with pet friendly listings all over the USA. I created this web site after searching for an apartment that would accept my Jack Russell Daisy, and my Beagle Jerry. As a pet owner I found it difficult to find pet friendly apartments, and wanted to help other pet owners find a home quick and easy. We also promote "Adoption." A lot of times when people are moving to a new home, they have a new furry friend in mind. They may even be searching for pet friendly apartments with the plan of getting a pet soon. We want to promote adopting instead of the local puppy store."
