Meet Amanda Malatesta

Amanda

Amanda Malatesta, fourth grader from Holy Family School, chose C.A.R.E. for her community improvement project. She gathered cash and food/toy donations from her neighbors and family, and brought the items to C.A.R.E. during our November 3, 2012 pet fair. In addition to $145 cash, Amanda brought dog food, dog toys, a dog bed cover, and more. Amanda is shown here with Cooper, one of our dogs available for adoption. We appreciate her desire to serve her community and that she chose to help C.A.R.E.

FALL FURRY FLURRY WALK-A-THON 2012

We had another successful event today at Fall Furry Flurry and I wanted to thank the following people:

Cat, Judy, and Cat's brother (Rob, right?) walked the 5K (with a handful of their dogs!) and brought in over $700 in pledges (maybe more, but that's the last figure I heard). AND JUDY SURVIVED THE FORCED MARCH ACROSS THE TUNDRA!!!!

Carl, Sue, Kathy, Kathy's mom, and Suzanne helped set up the booth. Kathy and her mom brought some baked goods to get donations toward Carly's surgery - and we brought in a few bucks that way! Carol and Joanne were also there to work the booth and enjoy the day! I heard that we even sold one dog Halloween costume!

And then there's Karen, who loaned me her car to load up the tent and everything, came with me to set up, spent the day at the event, then helped break down and return the stuff to CARE. I ended up ripping her headrest cover taking the tent out of the car, so feel very bad about that... Karen also told one of her co-workers about the event and she showed up and spent a few bucks at our booth ;-). Go Karen!

Thanks to all of you who took time from your families and other events (like football) to spend time supporting CARE! I really appreciate your support!

Meet Matthew Atangan

Matthew

He's a youngster who gathered items from his neighborhood to bring to C.A.R.E. He and his parents showed up today with two big bags of dog food; a medium-sized crate; a bunch of towels, sheets, and rugs; some dog toys; and $105 donation!! WOW! The flier that he gave to his neighbors included this: "Hi friends and neighbors. This is Matthew Atangan and I am doing a Community Service Project for school. The community I chose is animal rescue, and I am collecting donations for the Companion Animal Rescue Effort facility. This facility only runs off of donations and volunteers so anything would be a big help." When I asked him how he found out about C.A.R.E. he said that his neighbor had adopted a dog from C.A.R.E. years ago and that he loves dogs! Is this a great story or what??? A big thanks to Matthew!

After the tournament, players and volunteers enjoyed a delicious Mexican meal provided by San Jose Taqueria at nearby Varian Park and the winners were given their awards.

BARK IN THE PARK

C.A.R.E. had an information booth at Bark in the Park at the William Street Park (William and S. 16th Street) in San Jose on Saturday, September 15, 2012. This annual fun-filled event is billed as the valley’s premier event for dog lovers and their pets. A portion of the proceeds from the event benefit the Humane Society Silicon Valley and the San Jose Animal Care and Services. Many other non-profits as well as pet supply, boarding and grooming, training, and day care vendors attended as well as C.A.R.E. There was a dog costume contest, a silly dog tricks contest, a pet/owner lookalike contest, and a tail wagging contest. Many C.A.R.E. pet adopters came by our booth to say hello, which we really appreciate. Some of them are featured below.

Silicon Valley Playworks Volunteers Visit CARE

On Saturday, February 18, 10 volunteers from Silicon Valley Playworks, a non-profit organization sponsored by AmeriCorps and focused on bringing healthy play to low-income Bay Area elementary schools during the week, visited CARE during our regular weekly pet fair. We gave them many jobs to do including walking dogs, socializing puppies, folding laundry, and making fliers to hang up in coffee shops and bookstores. We provided the pizza and they provided the labor! Thanks to volunteers Anthony, Danny, Jevonne, K.C., Kris, Laura, Laura, Leslie, Matt, Mike, and Teresa!

Playworks is a national organization that has helped over 170 schools nation wide. Click on Silicon Valley Playworks to read more about them.

If you would like to volunteer at CARE, please call us or just stop by. We always have plenty of jobs to hand out, even some very fun ones like playing with puppies!

Pet Expo 2012

Held again this year at the Santa Clara Fairgrounds, the Bay Area Pet Expo on February 4 was bigger and better than last year. Booths were in two buildings with the jumping water dog booth in the yard between. 18,000 people attended the event, including Shorty Rossi from the Animal Planet’s show Pit Boss. He drew quite a few pit bulls and their owners and helped increase attendance at the event.

Whatever you’d think of buying for your dog was covered: leashes and collars, beds, toys, food, clothes, grooming tools and shops, artificial grass, insurance, and more. One of the buildings housed birds, rodents, and reptiles, so we were not only “going to the dogs” (as the Pet Expo ad said), but to many other creatures as well.

Also present were quite a few other rescue organizations from around the Bay Area and again many of them were adopting animals on the spot. CARE foster parents Kathy Vossler and Suzanne Ponder brought 5 of their foster dogs and 3 of them found their forever homes that day! Thanks also to volunteers Carol Santo, Cheryl Lander, JoAnn Witt, and Karen Leonard for help with setting up and being at the booth the day of the event.

And as with other events CARE attends, former foster dogs visited with their new owners – we’ve captured a few of them in our pictures from the event. If you were unable to make it this year, please mark February 2, 2013 on your calendar – the event will be back and we suspect it’ll continue to grow year after year and be the place to be each early February.

Silicon Valley Cares Broomstick Ball

C.A.R.E. was one of the beneficiaries of the 2nd annual Broomstick Ball on Saturday, October 22, 2011. The Broomstick Ball is a charity event put on by Silicon Valley Cares, a group of women whose sole purpose is to raise funds for organizations in Santa Clara County through a fun-filled night of dinner, dancing, casino games, and a huge silent auction. This event, held at the Dolce-Hayes Mansion, was a fundraiser for local non-profits. Along with three other organizations (Almaden Valley Counseling Service, the Bill Wilson Center, and Parents Helping Parents), C.A.R.E. will benefit from the proceeds of the event.

C.A.R.E. was asked to provide 8 volunteers, which we did. Here’s a list of C.A.R.E. friends who volunteered:

We had some of the best dressed and most impressive volunteers there at the event!

Three C.A.R.E. members (Cheryl Lander, Kathy Vossler, and Suzanne Ponder) and our significant others (as well as Cheryl’s hair dresser Chanara Chea) attended the event and had a blast! Silicon Valley Cares President Kelly Dippel reminded attendees the night of the event that the event was happening to benefit local non-profits, or as she says on her web site, it was a “fun and unique evening of entertainment, networking and compassion.” We’re extremely grateful to have been nominated and asked to participate. Any funding we receive from this event will help us save the lives of more animals.

FALL FURRY FLURRY WALK-A-THON

On Sunday, October 16, C.A.R.E. was one of several animal rescue groups and vendors participating in the 9th Annual Fall Furry Flurry Walk-A-Thon at the Los Gatos Creek Park in Campbell. This 5K walking event benefits the Pet Awareness and Welfare Society for San Jose Animal Care and Services and the Bay Area Siberian Husky Club. C.A.R.E. received donations from this event from the pledges C.A.R.E. friends indicated on their pledge sheets. After the walk, people and pets enjoyed visiting the booths of non-profit rescue organizations, trainers and behaviorists, and other pet related services. There also were several fun contests for attendees and their dogs, including a costume contest, the biggest and smallest dogs, musical sits, and bobbing for wieners. Two C.A.R.E. foster parents, Suzanne Ponder and Kathy Vossler, and their own dogs won prizes in the bobbing for wieners and the musical sit contest. There also was a silent auction with many great rewards for people and their pets. As with other events, a few C.A.R.E. adopters stopped by to say hello – some pictures are below:

BARKTOBERFEST

On Saturday, October 1, C.A.R.E. participated in Barktoberfest at the Humane Society Silicon Valley in Milpitas. We ran our weekly adoption fair from this location, as did many other rescues, instead of our store front in San Jose. This is a great opportunity for potential adopters to see a large group of available animals. We had a very successful day, adopting out 8 of our foster dogs!

Pet Fair at the Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center

On May 15, 2011, C.A.R.E. was invited back to the Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center in Los Gatos for a 2nd annual pet fair. One of C.A.R.E.’s friends, Janice Yoshihara, also displayed her dog paintings at the event (see her webpage for more info about this great artist). Unfortunately Mother Nature didn’t cooperate and we were rained out after about an hour. We did have a small group of prospective adoptees interested in the half dozen or so dogs we brought, and even adopted one dog out later that afternoon to an attendee. And a big thanks to our sponsor Dina Jacobson! And we’ve already talked about the 3rd annual event in May 2012! Here are some pictures from the event:
